The Legend of Rara Jonggrang
Once upon a time, in the ancient kingdom of Prambanan, there lived a powerful and wise king named Prabu Boko. One day, the king decided to build a magnificent palace for himself atop a hill. As the construction began, the workers faced numerous challenges, including the mysterious disappearance of materials every night. Determined to uncover the truth, the king disguised himself and discovered that a giant named Bandung Bondowoso was responsible for the thefts. In a fierce battle, Prabu Boko was defeated, and as a condition of surrender, he promised to give his beautiful daughter, Princess Rara Jonggrang, to Bandung Bondowoso in marriage.
Despite her fear, Princess Rara Jonggrang knew she had to find a way to thwart the giant's plans. She devised a clever plan by setting an impossible task for Bandung Bondowoso: to build a thousand temples in just one night. Confident in his supernatural powers, the giant accepted the challenge. However, Princess Rara Jonggrang and her people worked tirelessly throughout the night, lighting torches and making noises to trick Bandung Bondowoso into thinking that dawn had already broken.
As dawn approached, Bandung Bondowoso had only managed to build 999 temples. Enraged by his failure, he turned Bandung Bondowoso into a stone statue, which still stands as the last unfinished temple today, known as Candi Prambanan. Princess Rara Jonggrang's quick thinking saved her from an unwanted marriage and preserved the honor of her kingdom.
