 THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GREETING CARDS ON STUDENTS MOTIVATION IN WRITING COMPREHENSION AT THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A.    Background of the Problem

Writing is a one of the language skills that necessary to be mastered by students. Learners have to pay attention to writing skill because writing is not easy for students. Writing has an important role in English as second language (EFL) or English as foreign language (EFL) learning. It is representation of language in textual medium through the using of a set of sign of symbols known as writing system. In this case the communication occurred between writers and readers. The writer transferees his/her though, opinion, or comment in written form, which is expected to be comprehended by the readers.

Therefore, writing is one of important skill can transfer his/her idea to do the communication with the reader. Writing is an activity to establish a note or information in a media with letter. Writing is also system of human visual communication using signs or symbols associated by convention with units of language, meaning or sounds, and recorded on materials such as paper, stone, or clay. Besides, writing is one of the four skills in language.

Writing is very important for students. By writing the students can express their mind, their ideas, and their opinions. The following illustrations will present some significances of writing for human life. First writing is tool communication. Written communication is different from oral communication. Although equally is communication activities, that have the purpose to give something to other people, but writing has special character. Human are trained to arrange the letter to word, word to sentence, sentence to paragraph, and paragraph to article. Through writing, the students can communicate with other people, like writing letter, short message, and others.

Writing is still being one difficult skill to be mastered. It becomes one difficult because it is a complex activity. It requires students’ comprehensive abilities such as mastering grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. Besides, to write well, the students are expected to be able to present their ideas in the written form as a means of communication. Students have difficulty when they write their idea or thought in their own native, whereas in English.

Exactly, writing is not an easy skill to master. Writing is the hardest among other language skills. Teaching writing with appropriate media is crucial to make the writing class becomes more effective, interesting, and enjoyable for the students. Students are unlikely to be very successful at learning unless they enjoy the process. Teacher should apply appropriate techniques in teaching writing in order to make students enjoy the writing process; one of them is teaching writing through seasonal greeting cards.

Greeting cards are an illustrated piece of card or high quality paper featuring an expression of friendship or other sentiment. Although greeting cards are usually given on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas or other holidays, such as Halloween, they are also sent to convey thanks or express other feelings. This study explains about teaching seasonal greeting cards because the students are already confused and feel difficult to make greeting cards (Tristanthi, Sulistyaningsih and Sabat 2017: 2).

Based on the explanation above, researcher was interested in conducting experimental research, by which the purpose was to solve the students’ problem in writing skill by title: The Effectiveness of Greeting Cards on Students Motivation in Writing Comprehension at the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA
