DISSECT is a word identification strategy that combines
several of the strategies covered in the preceding paragraphs. The strategy,
developed by Deshler and associates (year), emphasizes the systematic analysis
of a word using context and word element clues. This vocabulary identification
strategy may be introduced to individual students or to groups by a facilitator. The instructor models the strategy and provides sample
words with which the students may practice. Students should be encouraged to
think aloud while learning the strategy. After they gain proficiency, students
may use the strategy on their own or with study groups.
DISSECT
may be used for learning new vocabulary in general reading assignments and in content-specific
texts. The strategy provides a simple mnemonic for remembering a combination of
effective vocabulary strategies (Deshler, et al, year).
