CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter, the researcher
presents background of the research, research question, objective of the
research, significance of the research and scope of the research
A.
Background
of the Problem.
Corona virus Disease 2019
(Covid-19) has spread very fast and to almost all countries, so the World Health
Organization (WHO) declared this outbreak a global pandemic in March 2020 (BBC,
2020). All life sectors are affected. To break the chain of the spread of
Covid-19, several institutions have implemented a new policy, namely working
from home so that there are no services at the office. Even if there are services
in the office, the number of employees and visiting is limited, and health
protocols are strictly implemented.
Based on Kundu and Bej
(2020: 1) Corona Virus Starting from China, the deadly COVID-19 pandemic,
caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, has already taken up
the whole world into its capture compelling the World Health Organization (WHO)
to declare it as a pandemic disaster on March 11 2020 (WHO, 2020) and almost
the whole world has put under the house arrest. As of April 18 2020,
approximately 1.725 billion learners have been affected due to school closures
in response to the pandemic according to United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) monitoring 192 countries have implemented
nationwide closures and 5 have implemented local closures, impacting about
99.9% of the world’s student population (UNESCO, 2020).
With COVID-19, the
world has been facing a new existential enemy and the nations contentiously
must again summon its educational, moral and scientific might to fight it back
because it has brought a time of social distancing, not mental. Thus, the issue
at hand is not associated with limitation in educational institutions but a
situation demanding for an emergency remote teaching-learning because social
gatherings including educational institutions are seen as a threat to promote
COVID-19 pandemic and have been locked down.
As state from Pokhrel
and Chhetri (2021: 134) There is a fear of losing 2020 academic year or even
more in the coming future. The need of the hour is to innovate and implement
alternative educational system and assessment strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic
has provided us with an opportunity to pave the way for introducing digital
learning. This article aims to provide a comprehensive report on the impact of
the COVID-19 pandemic on online teaching and learning of various papers and
indicate the way forward.
Efriana (2021: 39)
point out Learning from home is implemented with a distance learning system in
face locked down in pandemic. Distance learning is an education system in which
learners are separated from the educator and the learning process uses various resources
through Information and Communication Technology (ICT). In the implementation,
the distance learning system is applied through an online learning approach. In
the Covid-19 pandemic condition, this learning method can be a solution so that
the teaching and learning process can continue.
Online learning is a part
of distance education that specifically combines electronic technology and
internet-based technology or ICT in learning. Online learning is a program for
organizing online learning classes to reach a broad and massive group of students.
Online learning refers to the use of internet-based technology features, which
are highly dependent on the availability of information technology.
Therefore, this study
focused primarily on the readiness as a challenges that students are expected
to face in online learning in this COVID-19 era and the researcher formulated
this research under the title “The
Students Readiness in Facing Online Class after Pandemic Covid 19”
B.
Research Question
Based on the background
of study, the researcher formulates some statements of the problems as follows:
1. How are the students’ readinesses of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic?
2. How are the students’ readinesses of distance learning in online class during the COVID-19 pandemic?
C.
Objective
of the Research
Dealing with the
statement of the problems above, the researcher intends to achieve some
objectives through the study as follows:
1. To identify the students’ readinesses of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic
2. To identify the students’ readinesses of distance learning in online class during the COVID-19 pandemic
D.
Significance of the Research
This research is directed
to present theoretical and practical significance.
1. Theoretical Benefits
This research is expected to be able to
study the readinesses of students online class on distance learning. Especially
during COVID-19 pandemic situation.
2. Practical Benefits
a. For
lecturer
This research not only contains the
students’ readinesses, but also the online class in distance learning methods during
the COVID-19 pandemic in conveying teaching and learning process. Therefore,
lecturers can use data to be used in the conveying teaching and learning
process.
b. For
teachers
This research provides theories,
examples, and data related to the students’ readines in teaching and learning.
The teachers can use this research as reference material to complete the
learning material happening.
c. For
researcher
This research can provide guidelines for
the next researchers to develop the use of learning online class when there are
obstacles in the teaching and learning process.
E.
Scope of the Research
This research focuses
on the students readinesses of distance learning and online class during the COVID-19.
The researcher limits the data of the study about students’ readinesses. The
researcher only analyzes the students’ readinesses of distance learning during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
