Picture Walk
is a strategy of “walking” students
through a picture book and calling attention to the pictures/illustrations in
the book to tell the story. It is previewing the pictures in a storybook to
familiarize the child with the story prior to reading the text.
Picture Walk sparks interest in the story and set the
purpose for the child to read and learn more about the story. It
helps a child connect the pictures in the story to their own experiences
and activate prior knowledge. Picture
Walk is a helpful comprehension strategy for ELLs.
Independent Practice: Picture Walk
1.
Direct
students to get into pairs and choose a picture book. Tell students that they
will practice going on a picture walk together.
2.
Have
partners explore the book together, taking turns describing the pictures they see.
3.
Encourage
students to ask similar questions you modeled to them.
4.
Remind
students to stop the picture walk before the ending. Go around to each group
and record the students’ predictions.
5.
Have
students verify their predictions by reading the book.
6.
Hold
a class discussion and have students share their observations and feedback on
doing a picture walk.
