Concept of Think-Ahead and Write (TAW) Strategy (Definition & Procedure)
1. Definition of Think Ahead and Write Strategy
Karen A. K, & Mary A. E (2008: 145) defines Think ahed write as a before, during and after reading comprehension technique, use to establish interest, curiosity and purpose prior to reading. and to review the information after reading. A prerequisite is the ability to generate predictions and meaningful questions related to the text, Students will organize their thoughts about reading and will improve comprehension.
TAW is one of the strategies that can be applied in teaching reading. It helps students easily understand English passages. Valery Gold and Pintozzi in their book (1997: 41) calls (TAW) as a predicting. It is a process that requires readers to ask questions, create mental images, and relate what readers already know about the topic to readers own experiences. Like the visual learner, reader develops mental pictures about the topic. Sibberson. S & Szymusiak. K (2003: 38) Concludes think ahead write as pay attention to ways that their tastes are changing and expanding.
2. The Procedure of Think Ahead and Write (TAW) Strategy
Based on Ellis. E 2007:2 designes procedure of think ahead write as follows to utilize key text clues or “hints” such as titles, headings, subheadings, pictures, vocabulary terms, summary statements, and questions to gain some idea of what the chapter will be about. Performing the strategy requires using several powerful cognitive learning strategies such as activating background knowledge, predicting, analyzing questions, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
Valery Gold and Pintozzi (1997: 41) defines the application of TAW the students should follow the following steps:
1. Reading the title, subheadings, and first sentences of paragraphs of the selection. Then Ask questions, guess the answers, and write them down. There are no “right” or “wrong” predictions at this point.
2. Develop pictures in mind about the selection, and write about these images or they may prefer to draw these mental images.
3. Connecting between what already know about the topic and reading election. Write down these connections.
4. Reading the entire selection to check the accuracy of their predictions.
