Report Writing
Pestaria, Sinurat and Napitupulu (2014: 29) report is
a text which can be written out with a descriptive technique. It describes an
object to the readers. The length of the text depends on the specific details
of the object being described. A report may be defined to describe the
way things are, with reference
to a range
of natural, man-made
and social phenomena
in our environment.
Maysarah and Rahmah (2014: 4) report text is a text
that describes the way things are with reference to a range of natural,
man-made and social phenomena in our environment. It presents information about
something that is under discussion. Generally, it is written after getting
careful observation. Report text is different from descriptive text which
describes one particular or specific thing, person, or place, e.g. “My Father”.
The basic purpose of report text is to describe general feature of a kind
thing, living or non-natural in our environment, e.g. “cat”, and “coat”.
The term report is difficult to
define because it refers to such a wide variety of documents. Reports can be as simple as filling in the
blanks or answering a few questions about an
accident, or they can be long and involved requiring years of study,
hundreds of contributors, and several thick volumes to record the results. What
then are the basic characteristics of a report?
a. All
reports are factual. You must be able to back up any facts you include.
b. All
reports organize facts into a meaningful presentation. Most reports interpret
the information gathered.
c. Many
reports make recommendations.
d. Almost
all reports are assigned or requested.
This means that your purpose and audience are determined before you
start to work.
