THE EFFECTIVENESS OF JIGSAW TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE READING
COMPREHENSION SKILL IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT (Pre Experimental)
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of Problem
English as an international language for communication has been considered
as an important subject in Indonesia.
All aspects of language skills;
Speaking, Listening, Reading and
Writing with structure and vocabulary as supporting materials are taught at
schools to pursue the objectives: i.e. making
the students master English (especially speaking and writing) as means
of communication and (especially reading) as a tool of gaining science and
technology. English become the
only foreign language
which is included in
National Examination (UN)
from Junior High
School to Senior High
School. Then, it became one of
some decision maker subject for the students’ graduation to know how well they understand
English during their study. Thus, learning English has been important to do.
However, most of the students still face some problems in learning English.
They think that English is very difficult to be learnt and understood. These problems have to be solved to make teaching
learning process successful. As we know,
there are four
skills that must
be learnt in studying English; listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. The researcher made an interview to the
English teacher, from the
result of the interview to the tenth
grade of SMA N 1 had a problem in reading, the students
are lack in vocabulary and must open
an dictionary to finds the meaning of the word and sentence and the reading activities is slow and make the learning ineffective it
is only wasting time but also losing the understanding of reading purposes
Regarding this problem, the Cooperative learning method becomes one of the
solutions that can minimize the problems found in the students of tenth grade
of SMA N 1 in academic year 2018/2019. Under the
