CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter deals
with background of the research, statement problem, objective, significance of
the research, scope of the research and key terms.
A.
Background of the study
There are four basic
abilities that are learned in studying English, they are listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Writing is one of the skills that must be learned by the
students. In writing, the learners must apply five general components of the
writing process; they are content, form, grammar, style and mechanic. The
writer thought that the composition was important for the learners to develop
their imagination in written English.
Generally, people tend
to believe that the reception of second language is as easy as the reception of
first language. Therefore, the teaching of the second language tends to give
their point on the way the first language taught. One of the most popular ways
in teaching language in first language is
through grammar. This
then becomes familiar
method in teaching
English and for some people is regarded as the
traditional method. However the question whether the teaching of English grammar
gives significant influence
to the learners
competence is still
in controversy.
Some researches on this
case have proven that the grammar has positive influence to the learners’ skill
while other researchers found that grammar has negative influence to learners’
skill. Skill in terms of linguistic or language competence is divided into
receptive skills and productive skills. In this study the researcher will focus
only on the correlation between learners’ working knowledge of English grammar
and their receptive skills.
Ranjbar (2012: 2)
Knowing words is the
key to
understanding as well as
being understood, and
the bulk of
learning a new language consists of learning new words.
Since we are faced with lots of new vocabulary items in our reading and
listening, one helpful technique is to guess the meaning of unknown words. In
many cases this attempt fails because of the lack of our knowledge regarding
the grammatical structure of the sentences.
Lado in Mazur (2014:
45) The student who comes in contact with a foreign language will always find
some features of it quite easy and others extremely difficult. Those elements
that are similar to his native language will be simple for him, and those
elements that are different will be difficult. The elements that are similar to
his native language will be simple for the students while those elements that
are different will be difficult. Based on the statements above, the students
frequently got some difficulties. In other world, the students sometimes made
grammatical errors; in this case, they were very likely to make errors probably
because of the language habit in their mother tongue that was sometimes
slightly or absolutely different from English.
Wilcox, Yagelski &
Fang Yu (2013: 5) Grammar signifies more than just a person’s ability to
remember high school English. I’ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on
a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something
completely unrelated to writing. The elements that are similar to his native
language will be simple for the students while those elements that are
different will be difficult. Based on the statement above, the students
frequently got some difficulties. In other world, the students sometimes made
grammatical errors; in this case, they were very likely to make errors probably
because of the language habit in their mother tongue that was sometimes
slightly or absolutely different from English.
In writing process, the
students must have an idea about what they will write and far they know the
topic, find the appropriate words to express an idea. One simple way of making
writing more meaningful to students is to make students write something
elaborate the experience they have. Every experience has the seeds for the
potential flowering of significance ideas. If we talk about experience, it
means we talk about expressive writing. If we talk about expressive writing, we
must talk about narrative story.
Narrative itself is a
story taking by presenting sequence event in chronologically order. Writing
narrative can make the students be more interested and easy to write since
narrative text tells us about interesting story and experiences that can make
the students enjoy to write and feel the story. So, it will be quite easy for
them to producing the simple text.
