TRANSLATION
ERRORS IN ENGLISH-INDONESIAN HUMOR TEXT PRODUCED BY STUDENTS OF BASIC
TRANSLATION CLASS
Chapter
1
Introduction
a. Background of the Study
Translation is
a communication activity
that involves language.
People from around the
world who do
not have the
same language can
be connected by translation. Even
if people do not have
the same language
and they do not
understand the language of a text, through translation they can understand any
text that they read.
Therefore, translation is
important because it
is a type
of communication, and if there
are errors in translation, the real
message of the text is not communicated well.
According to
Simatupang
(2000),“Translation is transferring
the meaning of source
language into the
target language and
expressing it in
the target language with
the form which
is proper based
on valid rules
in the target language”(p. 2). Good
translation should be as natural
as possible so
that the reader is
unaware that he is reading
a translation. Besides,
in translation, correctness is relative;
it depends on who is the reader.
Larson (1984) states that in order to
get the best translation, translation should
“a) use the normal language forms
of the receptor
language, b) communicate,
as much as
possible, to the receptor language speakers the same
meaning that was understood by the speaker of
the source language,
and c) maintain
the dynamics of the original
source language text.”(as cited
in Simatupang, 2000, p.3). Maintaining the dynamics means that
the impression gained
by native speakers
of source language
or response they are given must
be equivalent with the impression and
the response of native speaker of target language when reading or hearing the
translated text. A translator usually had problem in fulfilling those criteria
above. It is very difficult to
transferring the meaning
in source language
into the target
language without changing it,
nothing is deducted and added, and expressed as natural as possible in the
target language.
Based on
the personal experience,
the writer found
that translation was quite complicated. In translation, people
did not simply render the meaning of the text
word-per-word, people also
need to consider
the context of
the text. They???????????
