CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

“Men as social beings need language as a means of communication in order to live in a society. Where there are human beings in part of this world, there is always a social community and in that community a particular language is used as a means of communication” (Ramelan, 1992: 8). In other words, it can be said that in daily life, man and language cannot be separated from each other.  Through language, man can express his ideas and wishes. It can hardly be imagined if man does not have a language. There will undoubtedly be difficulties in communication. People in this world use different languages as well, because of the different geographic locations and historic backgrounds. 

In order to communicate and disseminate all of the information either in national or international world, people use English as the international language. As an international language, English has been learnt by many people from various countries and cultural backgrounds. It has been a means of communication for many people in the world and used in various fields such as science, education, technology, business and commerce, etc  Nowadays, English is more socialized in Indonesia. It is because many Indonesians realize that by writing and speaking English correctly and fluently, it will????
