CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.Background of the
Study
Life
and language are related to each other.
This phenomenon started from human’s need in communicating. Basically, human as
a social creature always depends on social relation. When language as a tool
for communicating is used, the language can affect human development. From the relationship
between human beings in a society it
shows that human has a quality of communication. Fiumara (1995:126) claims that
the life and language synergies may then begin to appear in the full diachronic
dimension affecting human development. From the statement above, it is clear
that language acquisition of human being
is mostly influenced by their surrounding.
Nowadays,
language is changing with the changing of the world in science and technology.
We should become people who will be able
to face modern life in globalization area.
When we struggle to live in the globalization area, we should have many
skills including mastering languages. One of them is English, the international
language. By mastering English we already have a key in reaching our goals. People
who master English usually have bigger chance to develop their business. They
are more appreciated than other businessmen who are not able to do so.
The
Indonesian government realizes that English is an important subject for
students nowadays. As a proof, English is taught at school from the first grade
of Junior High School through the third grade of Senior High School, and at some departments
at the universities in Indonesia as well. Even now, in certain regions English
is taught at Elementary Schools as a local content subject. Moreover, many
English courses are also appearing in Indonesia. This tendency also supports
that English language is needed nowadays. As teachers, we should cover all of
the English skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and also the language components: phonology, vocabulary,
and structure. As stated in the Curriculum Design, one of a framework of
components is a common professional
vocabulary (Richards, 1996:12)
In
order to write and to speak English well, the students have to master the
components mentioned above, especially the structure and the vocabulary. To
learn English is not easy, the students will find many problems. The learners
who are from countries with English as the first language, the mastery of
vocabulary and structure will be different from the learners coming from a country
with English as second language or as a foreign language, such as Indonesia.
Learners
from countries with English as the first language will not have difficulties in
acquiring the two language components. The mastery of vocabulary and structure
has been acquired early as subconscious habits; which will become automatic
habits of the adult learners of a new language. The learners listen to the
language and use it directly in their daily life. In ????????????????????????????????
