I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
Background
Human
is social living being, who always need company in their life. It is hard to
imagine that they should live alone without anyone to accompany them. They
always need others in order to facilitate their efforts to provide themselves with
their necessities of life. To carry out the cooperation among others, they need
a means of communication, which is called ‘language’.
Hornby
(1992:62) defines that language is a system of sounds and words used by humans to
express their thoughts and feelings. Other definition is given by Carrol as
quoted by Ramelan that language is an arbitrary system of sounds or sequences
of speech sounds which is used or can be used to interpersonal communication
(Ramelan, 1992:10). In other words, it can be said that language is a system of
sounds used as a means to communicate human’s feelings and thoughts with
others. Ramelan states that the use of language enables the members of a social
group to cooperate with one another for their own benefits (Ramelan, 1992:14).
Regarding the use of language, the writer can say that the role of language is
very important in human life as a means
to communicate ideas, feelings and desires among individuals as the part of
social community. The opinion is also strengthened by Nasr’s opinion that
stated that language has a social function and without it society would
probably not exist (Nasr, 1978:1).
That
language has very important role and
function in human life is absolutely reasonable, however, there is a problem since certain areas use different
language from others. Each language has its own rules differs from others.
Nasr
says that there are differences of part of languages. He states that language,
as a system, operates in set patterns.
These patterns exist on three related parts, those are phonology, vocabulary,
and grammar (Nasr, 1978:2). Those three patterns are called language
components. The different components of language between the target language
and the mother tongue may cause problems in learning a language.
In
this study, the writer takes English as the example, as it is considered as the
International language that is very
badly needed to communicate with other people from around the world.
English is the language that is most widely spoken in the world. Considering
