INTODUCTION
A.
Background
English as the one of languages that is taught in many educational
institutes (formal and non formal) has many problems in teaching it. One of
them is about the methodology of teaching. The problems which come in the teaching
process are caused of many factors, especially from the students’ interest
toward English as their subject. The interest of ones can appear when they are
given an interesting thing. That is also happening in English teaching. When
the students are given an interesting method which can involve them in learning
process, of course, they will be enthusiastic to accept the material.
Nowadays, English
is very significant
language to learn
because it is
one of international languages
which are usually
used for communication. English
is the pre-eminent
language of wider
communication. It is
used as a
library language, as the
medium of science,
technology and international
pride, and as
a contact language between nation and parts of nation.
So, English is the need of the modern people who want a workable knowledge of
English and better improvement.
One of the essential
parts of learning English is grammar. Grammar is the system of rules
governing the structure
of phrases, clauses,
and sentences consisting
of words contained in the lexicon
(Sri Widiati, 1998:7). We have to understand grammar when we want to make a
good sentence by knowing the way to arrange and form the words well.
Unfortunately, the ability of the students in understanding grammar is still
less.
Gerund is the things
which have to be learned in grammar to make good sentences. Sometimes most of
the students still do not know which verb functioning as the complement must be
in the infinitive or the gerund form is. Even they also do not know which
particular verbs, particular adjectives and particular nouns that appropriate
to precede gerund. That
