I
INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background of the Study
As
an international language, English has an important role in the world. It can
be used to communicate with people of other countries and it is also used as an
instrument in utilizing modern sciences and technology. People who want to be acquainted
with technological and scientific advances have to master this language well. In
Indonesia, English is the first foreign language. Because of its important position,
English has been taught as one of the compulsory subjects in all high schools,
from the first grade of the junior high
school up to third grade if the senior
high school.
The
role of English is so important that achievement of formal education is expected
to be satisfactory. However the result of English Language Teaching (ELT for
short) at Secondary School or Sekolah Lanjutan Tingkat Pertama (SLTP for short)
is assumed to fail and the final examination marks of SLTP graduates show that
the students are not successful in mastering English. We have to do something
with it. Although English has been taught for a long time, the result of the teaching
English is still considered unsatisfactory (Ramelan 1992:3).
The
poor English mastery of our students can
be found among the high school graduates when they continue their study
to university??????????????
