HARIMING, 2010. Improving the students’ reading
comprehension through REDW strategy (A classroom action research at the seventh
year students of SMP Islam ATHIRAH Makassar), under the
thesis of English Education Department the Faculty of Teachers Training and
Education, Makassar Muhammadiyah University (guided by M. Basri Dalle and Abd.
Waris Hamid).
This research aimed to explain the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension covering main
idea and topic sentence and summarizing, covering content and sequence idea.
To explain the improvement, the
researcher used a classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles
in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research
was taken at the seventh year students of SMP Islam ATHIRAH Makassar with a
number of the subjects were 30 students.
The
research findings indicated that the application of REDW strategy was
significant to improve
the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension and summarizing. It was proved by the mean score of cycle I was
6.31 then
improved to be
7.63
in cycle II. They were higher than the mean score of diagnostic
test namely 5.24. Therefore, there was the improvement of the students’ reading
comprehension in terms of
literal comprehension covering, main idea and topic sentence and summarizing, covering content and sequence idea.
REDW strategy
improved the students’ literal comprehension and summarizing at seventh year
students of SMP Islam ATHIRAH Makassar. Literal comprehension improved 23.90%
and summarizing improved 22.80%. It was indicated that REDW strategy was
suitable to improve the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal
comprehension covering main idea and topic sentence. Summarizing covering
content and sequence idea.
