“Improving the Students Ability to use Modal Auxiliary through Presentation, Practice, and Production Approach



ABSTRACT
 
MUAMMAL, 2012. Improving the Students’ Ability to Use Modal Auxiliary through Presentation, Practice, and Production Approach at the Second Grade of MA Islamic Boarding School Hidayatullah Makassar (A Classroom Action Research), 
The research questions of this research were how is the improvement of students’ ability to use modal auxiliary in expressing advisability by using presentation, practice, and production approach?, how is the improvement of students’ ability to use modal auxiliary in expressing necessity by using presentation, practice, and production approach at the second grade of MA Islamic Boarding School Hidaytullah BTP Makassar?
The researcher used A Classroom Action Research (CAR). The aims of this research are to find out the improvement of students’ ability to use modal auxiliary through presentation, practice, and production approach.
Two cycles had been conducted, where each cycle consisted of four meetings. It employed writing test as instrument. A number of subjects of the research were 23 students in the second grade of MA Islamic Boarding School Hidayatullah BTP Makassar conducted of 23 men. The researcher took real data from the school to know the students’ ability to use modal auxiliary through PPP approach.
The results of the student's grammar especially modal auxiliary test in cycle 1 and cycle 2 had increased in different scores.  There was increasing by students at the end action of second cycle. The research findings indicated that use of PPP approach could increase the students’ grammar especially modal auxiliary. The means scores of students in Diagnostic test was 49.59 became 60.43 in cycle 1, and after revision in the cycle 2 the mean score in cycle 2 was 74.13 by implemented of modal auxiliary.
         The successful of minimal criteria (KKM) was 65 while cycle 1, there were 6 (26.08%) students  poor, 13 (56.52%) get fair, and 4 (17.39%) get good meant that students who achieved the successful minimal criteria (KKM) more than a half of them. In cycle 2 there was 13 (13.04%) get fair, 14 (60.86%) get good and 6 (26.08%) get very good.
