CONCEPT OF THINK AHEAD AND
WRITE (TAW) STRATEGY
Pintozzi, F. J., & Valeri-Gold, M.
(2000: 41) TAW is one of the strategies that can be applied in teaching
reading. It helps students easily understand English passages. It is a process
that requires readers to ask questions, create mental images, and relate what
readers already know about the topic to readers own experiences.
Karen
A. K, & Mary
A. E (2008: 145) defines Think ahed write as
a before, during and after reading comprehension technique, use to establish
interest, curiosity and purpose prior to reading. and to review the information
after reading. A prerequisite is the ability to generate predictions and
meaningful questions related to the text, Students will organize their thoughts
about reading and will improve comprehension.
Procedure of think ahead and write
Ellis. E 2007:2 designes
procedure of think ahead write as follows to utilize key text clues or “hints”
such as titles, headings, subheadings, pictures, vocabulary terms, summary
statements, and questions to gain some idea of what the chapter will be about.
Performing the strategy requires using several
powerful cognitive learning strategies such as activating backgroundknowledge,
predicting, analyzing questions, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
Pintozzi,
F. J., & Valeri-Gold, M. (2000: 41) In the application of TAW the students
should follow the following steps:
1.
Reading
the title, subheadings, and first sentences of paragraphs of the selection.
Then Ask questions, guess the answers, and write them down. There are no
“right” or “wrong” predictions at this point.
2.
Develop
pictures in mind about the selection, and write about these images or they may
prefer to draw these mental images.
3.
Connecting
between what already know about the topic and reading election. Write down
these connections.
4.
Reading
the entire selection to check the accuracy of their predictions.
