The
concepts of Semantic Webbing Strategy
Starko (2010:187)
states that webbing is often used to organize such idea and information on a
topic. Semantic Webbing is graphic that
illustrates how to associate word
meaning and enables
students to make
connections between what they
know about words
and how they
are related (Nlichols D. W and Rupjey. W .H. 2004: 64).
According to Miceli. P (2006: 1) Webbing is a basic
brainstorming tool used by both individuals and groups. It lets a writer
identify a central idea and think of associated words to get the creative
juices flowing.
Based on Johanson. C. (2005:1) Educational
webbing helps students organize their thoughts and make connections between
prior knowledge and new learning. Webs, also known as mind maps or graphic
organizers, paint a visual picture that enables learners to see how concepts
fit together.
In addition, Cooper (2001: 128) states that
webbing strategy should
be used when students are just beginning to learn to construct meaning and can
formulate their own purposes or pre-questions or when the text is extremely
difficult. Usually the teacher should combine pre questions and purpose
statement with other strategies, such as discussion or brain storming, to
activate prior knowledge.
Semantic Webbing organizes
information and relationships in a visual display. It assists in reading comprehension and
concept attainment and in the setting of purpose for reading through
prediction. It is also a helpful
strategy for idea generation and organization in the writing process (Freedman.
G. and Reynolds. E. 1980: 677).
In addition, Cooper (2001: 128) states that
webbing strategy should
be used when students are just beginning to learn to construct meaning and can
formulate their own purposes or pre-questions or when the text is extremely
difficult. Usually the teacher should combine pre questions and purpose
statement with other strategies, such as discussion or brainstorming, to
activate prior knowledge.
According to the definition above the writer concludes
that the semantic webbing strategy is graphic of organize information or
relationship that associate the word meaning and connection what the students’
read.
